Yeah they're good XP, but you're much better off making runes for ancient magic to 99 runecrafting since you need so many of them for faster combat (magic is by far the fastest clear/kill times thanks to ancient magic). And once you get to ancient magic there's no reason to use any of the elemental strikes, the guaranteed damage for ancient magic is just too good. At the quantities of combination runes you need to make to reach 99 runecrafting you'll never use them up before you get to ancient magic, which doesn't use combination runes at all. Water strike/air strike/whatever is irrelevant, combination runes are rightly undervalued imo.
Another positive factor is that they're nice leveling up as they give good exp.

Obviously it gets more questionable when the amounts you need are out of balance, plus you need another rune essence per combo rune. Really, you climb to 15 runes per craft so the difference is 3/2 times larger than the numbers above with 10 runes per craft. You could spend 60 seconds to get 150 air and 150 water runes (2 seconds per craft, 30 seconds spent on each) for a total of 2.5 water strike casts per second, or you could spend 20 seconds to get 50 air/water runes plus 50 seconds turning them into 250 mist runes (2 of each as input, 10 mist runes per craft) which is 250/70= 3.57 air strike casts per second. Imagine a spell take water strike (1 air, 1 water per cast). Assume you get 10 runes per craft ( to make this math cleaner). Think of it like you're getting the multiplicative mastery benefits on more than one rune at once. I've seen this sub undervalue them more than once.
It's not worth it for spells that only use one elemental rune type (obviously, because you could just spend the time making more of that rune), but it's generally worth it for spells that use multiple. They get multiplied because of how runecrafting mastery works.
